Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for  municipalities that want to go green, save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life.


Transportation for America
This coalition seeks to align transportation policies with economic opportunity, climate change, energy security, health, housing and community development.

American Planning Association
The American Planning Association and its professional institute, the American Institute of Certified Planners, are organized to advance the art and science of planning and to foster the activity of planning — physical, economic, and social — at the local, regional, state, and national levels. The objective of the Association is to encourage planning that will contribute to public well-being by developing communities and environments that meet the needs of people and of society more effectively.

ANJEC
The Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions, a nonprofit organization,has helped New Jersey’s local environmental commissions and concerned citizens preserve and protect the state’s natural resources since 1969.

Community and Environmental Defense Services
CEDS’ mission is to help people defend their community and environment from the impact of poorly planned land development activities.

EcolQ Land Planning and Conservation
The EcoIQ.com Land Use website is for everyone interested in making smart choices about land use in our communities — choices that are both economically and ecologically intelligent.

Environmental Valuation & Cost Benefit Web Site

A grassroots campaign to save our views of the Hudson River and our quality of life.

Great Plains Institute for Sustainable Development
The Great Plains Institute for Sustainable Development is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the citizens of the Great Plains across many borders as they wrestle with issues affecting the long-term viability of their communities, the productivity of their economic enterprises, the quality of their environment and the prudent management of their resources.

Greenbelt Alliance
Greenbelt Alliance is the leading land conservation organization in the nine county San Francisco Bay Area. Formed in 1958, our mission is to protect the 3.8 million acre Greenbelt of farmlands, watersheds, parks and other productive open space through citizen action, research and education, and advocacy.

Growing Smart Project
In October 1994, the American Planning Association launched Growing Smart(SM), a major intiative aimed at helping states modernize statutes affecting planning and the management of change. The project will establish a long-term capacity within APA to assist states with statutory reform.

INFORM
A national organization that identifies practical ways of living and doing business that are environmentally sustainable.

Institute for Community Studies at Montclair State University
The ICS is a university based, privately funded organization that aims to promote an understanding of the forces that draw people together into groups with a shared sense of interests and responsibilities, and of the forces that create divisions among people. The ICS seeks to promote working relationships between the university and citizen groups in the Northern New Jersey area (and in some cases beyond) that are beneficial to the communities in which these groups are active and to the university and its students.

International Institute for Sustainable Development
To promote sustainable development in decision-making internationally and within Canada. We contribute new knowledge and concepts, analyze policies, identify and disseminate information about best practices, demonstrate how to measure progress, and build partnerships to amplify these messages.

Island Press
Island Press is a nonprofit organization whose principal purpose is the publication of books on environmental issues. Island Press provides solutions-oriented information to professionals, public officials, business and community leaders, and concerned citizens who are shaping responses to environmental problems. Available at IP’s website is a section on sprawl that contains current information on key sprawl issues as well as links to major sprawl websites.

League of Women Voters of New Jersey
A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose purpose is to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government.

Loka Institute
The Loka Institute is a non-profit research and advocacy organization concerned with the social, political, and environmental repercussions of science and technology.

The Michigan Land Use Institute
The Michigan Land Use Institute is a nonprofit research, educational, and service organization dedicated to fostering a new approach to economic development that respects the land, the community that inhabits the land, and the inherent process of change.

National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT)
NCAT provides information on sustainable technologies and community-based approaches that can help improve the lives of economically disadvantaged people.

National Housing Institute
National Housing Institute is an independent nonprofit organization that examines the issues causing the crisis in housing in America.

National Trust for Historic Preservation
Formed in 1949, the National Trust for Historic Preservation is dedicated to protecting the irreplaceable. It fights to save historic buildings and the neighborhoods and landscapes they anchor.

Natural Resources Defense Council
The Natural Resources Defense Council’s purpose is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends.

New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association
The mission of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association is to promote sound planning as a process essential to improving the quality of life of the citizens of New Jersey.

New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club
The Sierra Club is a national, member-supported environmental organization, which seeks to influence public policy in both Washington and the state capitals through public education and grass-roots political action.

New Jersey Clean Energy Council
The New Jersey Clean Energy Countil is recogned as a national model that promotes increased energy efficiency; supports installation of clean, renewable sources of energy and provides information to help reduce energy use.

New Jersey Conservation Foundation
A non-profit, member-supported land trust working to promote conservation of land and natural resoures throughout NJ for the benefit of all.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
Governing with the Future in Mind is the companion report to Living with the Future in Mind: 2000. Governing with the Future in Mind introduces the strategic initiatives that State government is pursuing to achieve the Goals of a Sustainable State.

New Jersey DEP Division of Watershed Management
A planning agency involved in watershed management and Water Quality Management Plannng in New Jersey.

New Jersey Highlands Council
The mission of the New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council is to restore and enhance the significant resource values of the Highlands, promote appropriate patterns of compatible development, and ensure agricultural viability for an area that is an essential source of drinking water for one-half of the state’s population.

New Jersey Institute of Technology Graduate Program in Environmental Policy Studies
The Master of Science in Environmental Policy Studies focuses on the role of the earth and social sciences in the development, implementation and evaluation of environmental policy.

New Jersey Meadowlands Commission
The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission is the zoning and planning agency for a 30.4-square-mile area along the Hackensack River covering parts of 14 municipalities in Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey.

New Jersey Office of State Planning
This office coordinates planning throughout New Jersey to protect the environment and guide future growth into compact, mixed-use development and redevelopment. The office implements the goals of the State Development and Redevelopment Plan to achieve comprehensive, long-term planning; and integrates that planning with programmatic and regulatory land-use decisions at all levels of government and the private sector.

New Jersey Pinelands Commission
The Mission of the New Jersey Pinelands Commission is to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural and cultural resources of the Pinelands National Reserve, and to encourage compatible economic and other human activities consistent with that purpose.

New Jersey State Long Range Transportation Plan
Offers a current status report on the statewide long-range transportation plan being developed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and NJ TRANSIT.

New Jersey Sustainable State Institute
The New Jersey Sustainable State Institute is dedicated to helping New Jerseyans “Live With the Future In Mind.” Our mission is to create a healthy, just, and efficient New Jersey for us, and for future generations.

PlanSmart NJ
PlanSmart NJ is an independent civic action group committed to improving the quality of community life through sound land use planning and regional cooperation.

Project for Public Spaces, Inc.
PPS is a non-profit planning and design organization dedicated to preserving public spaces as the nexus of community life. Founded in 1975, PPS has worked with over 750 communities throughout the United States and internationally to help make their public spaces more attractive, safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for all those who use them

Redefining Progress
A public policy organization addressing America’s future and how to acheive our desires. Redefining Progress seeks to shift the prevailing definition of progress, from one based exclusively on a growing economy, to one that resonates with people’s sense of the quality of their lives.

Rutgers School of Continuing Professional Education
Learn practical knowledge/skills and earn professional continuing education credits in a wide variety of environmental topics at Rutgers. Course topics include brownfields, wetlands, wastewater, environmental funding, pond design, safe pest management, radon, recycling, landscaping, beekeeping, pruning and much more.

Sierra Club
Promotes conservation of the natural environment by influencing public policy decisions.

Smart Growth America
Smart Growth America is a nationwide coalition promoting a better way to grow; one that protects farmland and open space, revitalizes neighborhoods, keeps housing affordable, and makes communities more livable.

Smart Growth Network
To encourage development that better serves the economic, environmental and social needs of communities. The Network provides a forum for information-sharing, education, tool development and application, and collaboration on smart growth issues.

Sprawl Watch Clearinghouse
The Sprawl Watch Clearinghouse is a resource center which provides information, advice and referrals on issues related to sprawl, smart growth and livable communities.
