Smart Housing Incentives

Creating homes that are affordable to our workforce and
friendly to the environment

The Smart Housing Incentives Act (A3632/S2505) creates a voluntary state program designed to encourage and assist municipalities in planning for "smart housing" -- homes that are well-located near jobs and transportation, walkable, energy-efficient and affordable to a range of households. Inspired by successful programs in Massachusetts and Connecticut, the program offers municipalities planning and visioning grants and financial payments for new housing units zoned and constructed.

"When the global economy turns around, as it surely will, New Jersey's ability to recover may be threatened by a severe shortage of housing for working people and their families." Joseph Doria, Jr., NJDCA Commissioner and Jane Kenny, former DCA Commissioner, former EPA Region 2 Administrator and Chair, Smart Housing for Economic Prosperity Task Force.
