Forum Overview & Select Photos New Jersey Future Executive Director Peter Kasabach welcomed the attendees, noting in his opening remarks, "sprawl remains the path of least resistance" for many developers and municipal officials, "yet it pits environmental concerns against development concerns...in a wasteful and unnecessary tug of war between two factions that have more in common at the end of the day than differences." Community Affairs Commissioner Joseph Doria urged attendees to "work together toward sustainable smart-growth communities."
Keynote speaker Robert Liberty was explicit, "redevelopment must become the dominant form of development in the United States over the next decade." After highlighting his own experiences in Oregon, Mr. Liberty issued a challenge to developers and environmentalists: join forces to stop suburban sprawl and promote revitalization of urban areas. Mr. Liberty has been an attorney for more than 27 years, with experience in land use planning issues, serving as a staff attorney and Executive Director for 1000 Friends of Oregon, the nation's oldest statewide Smart Growth advocacy organization.
