New Jersey Future Managing Director Teri Jover today issued the following statement regarding the decision by the Delaware River Port Authority to extend PATCO train service from Camden to Glassboro along the existing Conrail rail line:
“New Jersey Future is delighted that the DRPA has chosen this alignment for the proposed expansion of high-speed rail into Gloucester County. This new rail line will significantly expand the transportation choices available to residents in one of the fastest-growing regions in our state.
“The selection of this particular route, which was endorsed by the State Planning Commission because of its compatibility with the goals of the State Development and Redevelopment Plan, will allow Gloucester County to combat sprawl, protect its treasured open spaces and pursue a more sustainable course of walkable, mixed-use redevelopment in the heart of its most historic towns.
“Across the state, we have seen how investments in transit, such as the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line and PATCO service in Collingswood, can spur significant economic growth. In Gloucester County, historic centers like Woodbury and Glassboro, which recently received a New Jersey Future Smart Growth Award for its Rowan Boulevard redevelopment project, have already embarked on ambitious redevelopment efforts. The addition of the PATCO rail line will be a significant boost to these efforts.”
