Land Use Solutions
Transportation investments and policies significantly influence development patterns, which in turn shape travel behavior. The limited use of smart land-use strategies at the state and local levels increases the need to drive and limits residents’ transportation options.
Rather than continually building or widening roads, New Jersey Future promotes more compact and well-connected development that can reduce the number of car trips. These strategies include:
- Creating zoning policies that allow destinations to be closer together
- Building Complete Streets that accommodate other modes of transportation besides cars, like walking and biking
- Providing better connections between destinations of interest and neighborhoods that do not force local traffic onto busy, “main” roads for every trip
Simply adding road capacity to address traffic congestion creates a vicious cycle that ultimately worsens the problem. To alleviate congestion, transportation planners should first examine the broader land-use issues surrounding the problem and address them in their solution.
