Venue

Picture of 15 Washington Street, view from Military ParkThe 2018 Smart Growth Awards ceremony was held at 15 Washington Street, a building with a rich history connected to Newark’s past. Built in 1930 in a neo-classical style, the building served as the headquarters of the American Insurance Company until 1963. It was subsequently purchased by the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, which donated the building to Rutgers University in 1977. The building housed the Rutgers School of Law-Newark until 1999, when the new Rutgers Center for Law and Justice opened at 123 Washington Street. Fifteen years later, Rutgers University embarked on a public-private partnership to renovate the building, converting it into student housing, administrative space, and the Great Hall event space on the first floor. Rutgers reopened the building in 2015. Fifteen Washington’s history of redevelopment and its vibrant new life make it the perfect location for the Smart Growth Awards.
